Rank in AI Search Engines
ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews now answer “best [service] in New Orleans” directly. GEO is the engineering that makes your business the answer.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your business’s digital presence so that AI systems — ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot — retrieve it, trust it, and cite it when they generate answers. Where classic SEO competes for a ranked position on a results page, GEO competes for a mention inside the answer itself.
The distinction matters because the answer page is collapsing. When someone asks an AI assistant “who’s the best roofer on the Northshore?” there are no ten blue links — there are two or three named businesses, and everyone else is invisible. The way people find local businesses is changing faster than at any point since the smartphone, and the businesses that get named are the ones whose data was engineered to be retrievable.
GEO vs. AEO vs. SEO — what’s the difference?
SEO earns ranked positions in classic search results. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) targets the extracted-answer surfaces — featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistant responses. GEO targets generative systems that compose answers from many retrieved sources at once. They stack rather than compete: the entity engineering that wins the Local Map Pack is the same foundation AI systems retrieve against — GEO is the layer built on top.
How AI Engines Decide Which Businesses to Cite
Generative engines don’t “rank” you. They retrieve, evaluate, and synthesize — and each stage is something you can engineer for:
- Entity clarity. The model has to know, unambiguously, what your business is, where it operates, and what it does. That’s structured data: LocalBusiness and Service schema, consistent NAP, a knowledge graph that agrees with itself across your site, your GBP, and the citation network.
- Passage-level citability (chunking). Retrieval systems pull passages, not pages. Content engineered for GEO answers one question per section, under a heading that states the question, in language that survives being quoted out of context. A 2,000-word wall of prose retrieves worse than the same words chunked into self-contained answers — it’s why this page is built the way it is.
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). When an AI engine answers a local query, it typically runs a live search behind the scenes, retrieves the top results, and composes from them. Which means: if you’re not retrievable in classic search, you can’t be cited in AI search. SEO didn’t die; it became the supply chain.
- Corroboration. Models weight claims that multiple independent sources agree on. Reviews, local press, directories, chamber listings — the prominence signals of local SEO double as the trust signals of GEO.
- Crawl access. GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot have to be able to reach and parse your site. We configure crawler access deliberately — including llms.txt, the emerging manifest that hands AI systems a clean, curated map of what your business is and does.
Platform by Platform: Where Local AI Answers Come From
Google AI Overviews & AI Mode
Google’s AI answers lean on the systems Google already trusts: the local pack, the knowledge graph, and your Google Business Profile. For local queries, AI Overviews are largely a remix of local SEO signals — which is why our GEO engagements start by making sure the Map Pack foundation is solid. A weak GBP can’t be AI-optimized into relevance.
ChatGPT & Microsoft Copilot
ChatGPT’s web answers retrieve through Bing’s index — the most under-optimized surface in local search, because almost nobody does Bing Places hygiene. We do. Copilot sits on the same stack. For “best X in New Orleans” prompts, these systems reward clean entities, review corroboration, and quotable passages.
Perplexity
Perplexity cites sources inline and aggressively favors structured, factual, recently-updated pages. It is the clearest demonstration of passage-level citability: pages chunked into direct answers get quoted; marketing prose gets skipped.
Gemini & Claude
Gemini draws on Google’s graph; Claude retrieves via web search partners. Both reward the same fundamentals — which is the point. You don’t optimize for five platforms. You engineer one entity layer that all five retrieve.
We Don’t Just Use AI — We Build It
We’re a boutique agency on the outside. Under the hood, we build AI search infrastructure — enough of it that we run an entire platform devoted to the discipline: One Click GEO, our dedicated AI-search division. The tools our local clients run on are ours:
- Blog MONKEE — our AI content engine, built to produce researched, chunked, citability-engineered content that satisfies human readers and retrieval systems at the same time.
- Schema MONKEE — the most advanced schema deployment tool we know of, injecting deeply nested JSON-LD knowledge graphs so AI engines understand your local entity on first crawl.
- Agentic Tools — AI-driven applications built to dominate search and automate workflows in the real estate vertical.
That matters for one practical reason: when the platforms shift — and they shift monthly — we’re not reading about it in a newsletter. We’re reading it in our own crawler logs.
Does AI Search Actually Send Customers?
Fair question — and the honest answer is that it sends fewer clicks and better customers. When an AI assistant names your business, the user arrives pre-sold: the recommendation came wrapped in trust, the comparison shopping already happened inside the answer, and the next action is usually a call or a direction request rather than another round of browsing. Referral traffic from ChatGPT and Perplexity is still small next to Google — but it converts at rates classic search rarely touches, and it’s compounding quarter over quarter.
There’s also the defensive case, which for most local businesses is the bigger one. AI Overviews now sit on top of searches you already rank for. If the generated answer names your competitors and not you, you’re losing customers from queries you used to win — without your analytics ever showing the loss. The visibility you don’t engineer gets engineered around you.
Where this goes next: agents
The platforms are moving from answering to acting — assistants that don’t just recommend a plumber but draft the booking. When an AI agent executes “find me someone to fix this by Friday,” it will transact with the businesses whose data it can read and trust: structured services, real reviews, machine-readable hours and contact paths. Every layer of the GEO stack doubles as preparation for that world. The businesses that are citable today will be bookable tomorrow.
GEO for New Orleans & the Northshore Specifically
Generic GEO advice ignores the thing that decides local AI answers: geography. When the engines compose “best contractor in Covington” or “top med spa in Metairie,” they reach for entities with unambiguous local grounding — parish-level service areas, neighborhood mentions that corroborate across sources, reviews that name the places you work. Our campaigns build that grounding territory by territory, the same dual-shore architecture as our New Orleans and Northshore local SEO programs. In smaller markets like St. Tammany, the engines often have only two or three well-structured entities to choose from per category — which means on the Northshore especially, GEO is still a land grab. The early movers are being decided right now.
The Local GEO Protocol
- AI visibility baseline. We prompt the major engines the way your customers do — “best [your category] in [your town]” and its variants — and record who gets named, who gets cited, and where you stand. You’d be surprised how few agencies ever actually run the queries.
- Entity layer engineering. Knowledge-graph schema deployed sitewide, GBP and Bing Places reconciled, llms.txt published, crawler access configured for GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot.
- Content chunking pass. Key pages restructured for passage-level citability: question headings, self-contained answers, facts stated plainly enough to survive quotation.
- Corroboration build-out. Reviews, local citations, and press — the independent sources AI systems use to verify you’re real and reputable.
- Quarterly re-baseline. Same prompts, same engines, movement tracked. AI answers change fast; measurement keeps the program honest.
The AI Visibility Audit: What We Actually Check
Before anyone signs anything, we run the baseline. Here’s what it covers — so you know it’s an engineering inspection, not a sales document with a checklist stapled to it:
- Answer presence. Your category’s real customer prompts, run across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google’s AI surfaces. Who gets named, who gets cited, and whether you appear at all.
- Entity coherence. Does your schema, GBP, Bing Places, and citation network describe the same business — same name, same service area, same categories? Disagreement here is the single most common reason local businesses are invisible to AI retrieval.
- Crawler access. Whether GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot can actually reach your pages — we read your robots.txt, your WAF behavior, and your render path, because JavaScript-walled content is invisible to most retrieval crawlers.
- Citability scoring. Whether your key pages contain passages an engine can lift cleanly: question-shaped headings, self-contained answers, facts stated without requiring three paragraphs of context.
- Corroboration depth. Review volume and recency, independent local mentions, and whether third-party sources confirm what your own site claims.
- Competitor delta. The same checks run against whoever the engines currently name in your category — so the roadmap targets the actual gap, not a generic best-practices list.
The output is a written scorecard and a scoped plan. If the audit says you don’t need us yet — it happens, especially in thin Northshore categories — we’ll say so and tell you what to do on your own.

Is SEO dead now that AI answers questions directly?
No — it got a second job. Generative engines retrieve from search indexes before they compose answers, so classic retrievability is the prerequisite for AI citability. What’s dying is lazy SEO: thin pages and keyword stuffing never get quoted by anything.
How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?
Make your entity unambiguous (schema, consistent NAP, Bing Places — ChatGPT retrieves through Bing), make your pages quotable (one question per section, plain factual answers), and build corroboration (reviews and independent local sources). Then verify by actually asking ChatGPT — which is step one of our protocol.
What are AI Overviews, and can a small business appear in them?
AI Overviews are the generated answers Google places above classic results. For local queries they draw heavily on Map Pack and Business Profile signals — so yes, small businesses appear in them constantly, and the path in runs through the same local entity engineering we’ve always done, plus a citability layer on your content.
What is llms.txt and do I need one?
It’s a plain-text manifest at your site root that gives AI crawlers a curated summary of who you are and which pages matter — robots.txt’s helpful sibling. It costs almost nothing to publish, and we deploy it on every GEO engagement. We run one on this site.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Entity and schema corrections can surface in AI answers within weeks because the engines retrieve live. Building enough corroboration to be the consistently-named answer in a competitive category takes months — same honest physics as SEO. We re-baseline quarterly so you see the trajectory, not anecdotes.
Can you guarantee my business shows up in AI answers?
No — generative output isn’t deterministic, and anyone offering a guarantee is guessing for money. What we guarantee is the engineering layer the engines retrieve against, and measurement honest enough to show you exactly what they’re saying about you.
Should I block AI crawlers from my website?
Not if you want customers from AI search. Blocking GPTBot or PerplexityBot makes sense for publishers protecting paywalled content; for a local business it’s self-sabotage — you’re removing yourself from the answer pool your competitors stay in. We configure crawler access deliberately: open to the discovery crawlers, with llms.txt steering them to the pages that represent you best.
What does GEO cost for a local business?
Less than you’d guess, because it’s rarely a standalone engagement. The entity and schema work overlaps heavily with local SEO, so we deliver GEO as a layer on that stack — scoped after the free baseline, quoted flat, no long-term contract. The baseline itself costs nothing and tells you exactly where you stand in the answers today.
